Firmware Engineer Intern (Spring 2027) in USA

Responsibilities

  • Design and build C++ firmware for distributed aircraft microcontrollers.
  • Develop reliable Ethernet, serial, and other microcontroller communication interfaces.
  • Define platform-level interfaces and reusable firmware components for multiple aircraft subsystems.
  • Improve predictable performance across startup, real-time operation, fault handling, and recovery.
  • Optimize CPU utilization, memory usage, scheduling latency, timing jitter, and resource contention.
  • Develop metrics, monitoring, and troubleshooting capabilities for field deployment at scale.
  • Develop Rust-based tools and software-in-the-loop simulations to test and validate firmware behavior.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, embedded Linux, and systems engineers on deployed aircraft software.

Requirements

  • Prior internship or design team experience.
  • Experience writing C or C++.
  • Excellent grades in embedded systems classes.
  • Passion for learning about firmware, real-time systems, aircraft, and related systems.
  • Rising seniors are preferred.

Benefits

  • Full-time, in-person internship in South San Francisco.
  • Expected onsite schedule of five days per week.
  • Spring 2027 internship period from January through April/May.
