Principal Network Automation Engineer in Australia

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, operate, and support reusable production network automation and infrastructure-as-code capabilities.
  • Develop Python software with modular design, API integration, error handling, logging, packaging, dependency management, and automated testing.
  • Create and maintain Git-based CI/CD pipelines with quality gates, versioned releases, deployment controls, and secure credential handling.
  • Translate network intent into automation and validation logic for data centre networks, including pre-change and post-change testing.
  • Integrate APIs with authoritative sources of truth, inventory systems, and IP address management platforms.
  • Set technical direction, document architectural decisions, lead code and design reviews, mentor engineers, and influence architecture and operations teams.
  • Support production automation services across Linux environments, pipelines, application code, and network infrastructure, including incident response and on-call support.
  • Implement secure, least-privilege, auditable automated delivery aligned with ITIL incident, change, and problem management.
  • Take network automation capabilities from prototype through supported production adoption while improving reuse, maintainability, and reducing manual effort.

Requirements

  • Deep practical experience delivering production network infrastructure with Terraform and Ansible, including reusable modules and roles, declarative configuration, state management, idempotency, drift detection, and safe lifecycle changes.
  • Strong Python software engineering capability and experience building supported software rather than one-off scripts.
  • Proven experience designing and maintaining Git-based CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or Jenkins.
  • Strong data centre networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, BGP, routing, switching, segmentation, high availability, and leaf-spine architectures.
  • Experience modelling and validating network data using YAML, JSON, schemas, and templating, and integrating APIs with authoritative systems.
  • Experience implementing automated unit, integration, and network tests with failure handling and recovery.
  • Demonstrated principal-level technical leadership, including setting engineering direction, architectural decision-making, reviews, mentoring, and cross-team influence.
  • Experience operating production automation services in Linux environments with observability, incident response, troubleshooting, and on-call support.
  • Understanding of secure software delivery, least-privilege access, secrets management, auditable change controls, and ITIL practices.
  • Desirable experience with Cisco Nexus NX-OS, VXLAN EVPN, fabric automation, multi-site environments, Ansible AAP, Nautobot, NetBox, Nornir, containerised automation, self-service automation, event-driven automation, or relevant certifications.
