Responsibilities

Design, develop, and deploy machine learning solutions for economic challenges in Instacart’s multi-sided marketplace.
Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and engineers to translate business needs into impactful machine learning solutions.
Refine algorithms and models to improve operational efficiency.
Contribute economic and engineering expertise across problems involving matching, logistics, online advertising, uplift and long-term value modeling, and causal inference.
Share research, learnings, and best practices across the Economics team.

Requirements

Master’s or PhD in Economics or a closely related field.
Background combining economic theory, applied econometrics, and business skills.
Experience applying causal inference methods to observational and experimental datasets.
Understanding of machine learning algorithms and techniques.
Strong Python programming skills and fluency with SQL, Pandas, scikit-learn, and XGBoost.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, self-motivation, and ownership.
For Senior Machine Learning Engineer I hires: 1–3 years of industry experience in a similar role, experience deploying machine learning models to production, and experience with cloud computing and related ML infrastructure.
Preferred: PhD in Economics or a related field focused on data-intensive problems; related internship experience; experience with large language models and generative AI; and experience with uplift modeling, contextual bandits, or heterogeneous treatment effect estimation.
