Responsibilities

  • Build, operate, and scale Bloomberg Media’s internal and public GraphQL gateways and shared API infrastructure.
  • Design fine-grained caching and performance improvements for federated GraphQL systems serving high-traffic destinations.
  • Develop and promote internal and open-source GraphQL tooling, standards, and deployment practices.
  • Implement agentic workflows and AI-assisted tooling for graph quality, monitoring, software development, and feature delivery.
  • Own or improve centralized authentication and authorization, rate limiting, token management, observability, identity and access management adoption, and job scheduling services.
  • Provide GraphQL and API design guidance to client development teams and partner with product and content teams.
  • Analyze vendor and open-source products to support buy-versus-build decisions.
  • Lead technical decisions, mentor engineers, and help establish safer, clearer, and more reliable engineering practices.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building and running production backend services, including systems relied upon by other teams.
  • Expertise in at least one of JavaScript or TypeScript with Node, Java, Kotlin, or Python.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, service-to-service communication, caching, rate limiting, failure modes, and reliability at scale.
  • Current hands-on use of AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools.
  • Experience debugging production issues at web scale and familiarity with HTTP, DNS, TLS, proxies, load balancers, logs, metrics, and traces.
  • Strong cross-team communication, collaboration, technical decision-making, mentoring, documentation, and automated testing practices.
  • Preferred: hands-on GraphQL experience with Apollo Federation, schema design, and subgraph development.
  • Preferred: experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Preferred: experience with authentication and authorization systems such as OAuth, JWT, service identity, or IAM.
  • Preferred: experience with AWS and container-based deployment.

Benefits

  • Annual base salary range of $160,000–$240,000 USD, plus benefits and bonus.
