Senior Software Engineer in Remote

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver improvements to Wikipedia’s wikitext processing infrastructure while balancing user experience, performance, backward compatibility, and maintainability.
  • Develop new features collaboratively with engineers, product managers, designers, client teams, and community members.
  • Write PHP and JavaScript supporting hundreds of world languages.
  • Create and maintain internet APIs using server scripting languages.
  • Instrument components to monitor feature and quality characteristics.
  • Use caching and persistence technologies.
  • Own complex technical projects from problem definition through implementation and delivery, including architectural decisions.
  • Mentor engineers and raise team technical quality through code reviews, design discussions, documentation, or direct mentorship.

Requirements

  • At least five years of related professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience with parser generators, interpreters, language runtimes, compilers, or taking language features through a product cycle.
  • Experience designing and maintaining reliable, performant software used by other teams, products, or large user populations.
  • Ability to own complex technical projects, resolve dependencies, navigate ambiguity, and work with limited direction.
  • Strong unit and integration testing practices and ability to address security and code review feedback.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across team and organizational boundaries and communicate clearly in synchronous and asynchronous channels.
  • Experience mentoring other engineers.
  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree in computer science, software engineering, or another STEM field, or equivalent certification.
  • Familiarity with HTML5 and DOM manipulation is preferred.
  • Expertise in Node.js and related technologies is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Wikipedia, wikitext, Markdown, MediaWiki, Drupal, WordPress, or other content management systems is preferred.
  • Open source contribution experience is preferred.
