Software Engineer in USA new

  • Apptronik
  • Full time
  • Email
  • Austin, TX

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain high-fidelity actuator models covering friction, compliance, thermal behavior, and torque and current limits.
  • Design, tune, and deploy closed-loop torque, current, and low-level actuator controls on real hardware.
  • Design and run hardware test campaigns to characterize actuators and extract model and controller parameters.
  • Apply system identification and experimental model fitting to inform controller design and gain selection.
  • Quantitatively validate simulation-to-real fidelity for actuator models and controllers.
  • Build and maintain Python and C++ tooling for experiment automation, model extraction, controller tuning, and simulator integration.
  • Collaborate with Controls, Firmware, and Simulation teams on model fidelity, control performance, and sim-to-real gaps.
  • Support hardware bring-up and deployment of validated models and controllers to real robots.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 4 years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience; or a PhD in a related field.
  • Strong C++ skills, including extending simulator or physics-engine codebases.
  • Deep knowledge of motor electromechanics, classical control, closed-loop torque and current control, controller tuning, and frequency-domain analysis.
  • Hands-on experience designing, tuning, and validating low-level actuator or servo controllers on real hardware.
  • Hands-on system identification, structured experiment design, and physical model fitting from real data.
  • Proficiency in Python for test automation, data analysis, and tooling, with a track record of shipping maintainable Git-managed code.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with controls engineers and connect modeling and controller choices to robot performance.
  • Preferred experience with dynamometers, motor test stands, lab instrumentation, motor thermal modeling, gearbox efficiency and backlash characterization, real-time actuator communication protocols, embedded or firmware control, modern robotics simulators, sim-to-real validation, and Docker with GPU or cloud experiment infrastructure.
  • Humanoid or legged-robot experience is strongly preferred.

Benefits

  • Direct-hire position.
  • The role requires prolonged desk and computer work, occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds, and the ability to read screens and communicate by hearing and speech.
