Responsibilities

Maintain and expand local development tools that improve engineers’ inner-loop workflows.
Contribute to internal development platform components, including service templates and the developer portal.
Identify and resolve developer workflow bottlenecks such as slow builds, flaky tests, and difficult setup steps, using data to measure impact.
Maintain testing frameworks and core libraries used to develop web services.
Integrate and roll out AI-assisted development tools and support adoption across Toast engineering.
Partner with product engineering teams to understand pain points and improve the platform.
Operate owned production services, including monitoring, on-call participation, and incident follow-up.
Write documentation and participate in design and code reviews.

Requirements

At least 2 years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production software.
Proficiency in at least one general-purpose language such as Kotlin, Java, Go, or TypeScript.
Experience building and maintaining core libraries and developer tooling.
Working knowledge of containers and cloud infrastructure such as Docker and AWS.
Strong grounding in testing practices and maintainable, well-tested code.
Ability to work across unfamiliar codebases and debug problems across the stack.
Ability to understand fellow engineers’ needs and explain technical tradeoffs clearly.
Experience with Backstage Developer Portal, AI-augmented development workflows, third-party tools such as LaunchDarkly, Wiremock Cloud, or Postman, developer tools or plugins, developer metrics, or observability tools such as Datadog is preferred.
