Staff Backend Engineer in USA

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy backend services, data pipelines, and highly available APIs.
  • Own the full data path from ingestion and database schemas through services, APIs, integrations, testing, and production monitoring.
  • Prototype rapidly, evaluate hypotheses, and harden validated solutions for enterprise-scale adoption.
  • Set technical direction and make architectural decisions across multiple services, pipelines, and teams.
  • Contribute to DevOps, SRE, infrastructure, observability, and incident-response work as needed.
  • Build developer-experience modules and guardrails that enable non-engineering contributors to ship and maintain backend capabilities safely.
  • Establish backend engineering standards, mentor engineers, and drive cross-functional initiatives.
  • Plan rollback paths and test plans for high-risk changes while coordinating with stakeholders to mitigate disruption.

Requirements

  • Extensive professional experience as a backend engineer with demonstrated staff-level technical ownership and direction-setting.
  • Experience owning work vertically from database schema through APIs, integration tests, and production monitoring.
  • Experience shipping high-risk changes with rollback plans, test plans, and proactive stakeholder coordination.
  • Fluency with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, reliability, and incident response.
  • Experience using agentic engineering tools and deploying AI-augmented software systems to production.
  • Track record of building shared packages, tooling, and documentation that improve developer productivity.
  • Ability to collaborate with product managers, scientists, and customer-facing teams to translate needs into technical solutions.
  • Experience in a regulated environment such as ISO 27001 or SOC 2 is a bonus.
  • Production AI-augmented systems experience involving durable execution, quantified reliability evaluations, identity and scoped permissions, or prompt-injection defenses is a bonus.
  • Genuine interest in carbon, climate strategy, and energy is a strong plus.
