Staff Backend Engineer in Canada

Responsibilities

  • Influence the team roadmap and pursue individual career objectives.
  • Deliver new features with the team and iterate based on results, data, and feedback.
  • Drive projects from initial idea through production operations and customer delivery.
  • Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems with ownership of reliability, performance, and availability.
  • Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations and own the services being operated.
  • Write and review pull requests and design documents, support teammates, and participate in design discussions.
  • Contribute to open-source projects beyond the immediate team scope.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of Grafana Cloud, customers, and the codebase of a large distributed system.

Requirements

  • Solid experience with at least one programming language; Go is used, while Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar experience is transferable.
  • Experience leading and delivering software projects from requirements gathering through customer release.
  • Experience developing software that runs in the cloud or experience with systems engineering.
  • Experience participating in on-call rotations and following the DevOps model.
  • Experience writing clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
  • Familiarity with observability systems and using metrics, logs, and traces to debug problems.
  • Comfort with microservices architecture and distributed systems.
  • Experience and comfort developing with LLMs such as Claude and Codex in daily work.
  • Kubernetes experience is a bonus.
  • Experience with queue systems such as the Kafka protocol is a bonus.
  • Experience using Grafana and Prometheus in operational, on-call, hobby, or homelab settings is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code is a bonus.
