Staff Backend Engineer - Data Platform in USA

  • Haus Analytics
  • Full time
  • Email
  • San Francisco, CA

Responsibilities

  • Architect and build high-throughput backend ingestion services, normalization services, data contracts, and the platform control plane.
  • Solve distributed-systems problems involving exactly-once semantics, idempotent reprocessing and backfills, schema evolution, and flaky third-party APIs.
  • Own lakehouse and warehouse schema design, data models, dbt architecture, data quality frameworks, lineage, and BigQuery cost and performance.
  • Set the team’s engineering standards for testing, API design, code review, observability, and CI/CD.
  • Drive architectural decisions across the GCP, BigQuery, dbt, and Python stack.
  • Partner with engineering leadership, product engineering, and data science teams; mentor senior engineers and influence broader data strategy.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with deep backend and data expertise.
  • Hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse or lakehouse; BigQuery is preferred, with Snowflake, Databricks, or Iceberg-based stacks also accepted.
  • Deep SQL and dbt experience, including designing evolving schemas and optimizing complex analytical queries.
  • Expert-level Python experience building production services.
  • Track record of Staff-level technical leadership across multiple workstreams, including setting direction and writing design documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for defending technical decisions to engineering, product, and executive stakeholders.
  • Candidates should be strong in both backend engineering and data engineering; experience limited to SQL/dbt transformations, BI, analytics engineering, or operating data tools without building underlying production systems is not sufficient.
  • Open-source contributions to Apache Spark, Beam, Iceberg, Arrow, or similar data frameworks are a bonus.

Benefits

  • Flexible PTO.
  • Equity in the startup.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance with multiple plan options.
  • WFH stipend.
  • Events and offsites.
  • Free lunch when working from the San Francisco, New York, or Seattle office hubs.
  • New parent leave.
  • In-person collaboration is valued, with preference for candidates within commuting distance of offices in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York City.
