Staff Software Engineer in USA

Responsibilities

  • Own complex features and technical improvements from discovery through production rollout across backend services and data-processing pipelines.
  • Design and implement Java and Spring Boot distributed services, including APIs, asynchronous workflows, report generation, aggregation, exports, and scheduling.
  • Build and maintain batch and streaming ingestion and transformation pipelines using Python, PySpark, Azure Databricks, and Delta Lake.
  • Optimize Spark and Databricks workloads, including joins, partitioning, Delta operations, cluster utilization, query performance, and data reliability.
  • Implement data-quality controls, schema evolution, checkpointing, deduplication, replay, late-arriving-data handling, and tenant-boundary protections.
  • Improve service and pipeline observability with metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, monitors, and alerts.
  • Participate in on-call and incident-response workflows, reduce alert noise and operational toil, and create runbooks and diagnostic tools.
  • Review code and technical designs, document implementation decisions, collaborate across teams, and make trade-offs across reliability, performance, security, cost, and maintainability.

Requirements

  • Strong professional experience building and operating production software systems as a highly autonomous individual contributor.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, including distributed systems and microservices design and operation.
  • Production experience with asynchronous or event-driven systems, preferably Apache Kafka.
  • Strong experience with Python, PySpark, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and Azure Databricks or a comparable managed Spark platform.
  • Hands-on experience with test-driven development, automated testing strategies, and quality gates.
  • Strong understanding of metrics, logs, distributed tracing, dashboards, monitoring, and alerting, including hands-on Datadog and Grafana experience.
  • Experience creating or responding to PagerDuty incidents, Datadog alerts, or equivalent production alerting workflows, with willingness to join an on-call rotation.
  • Experience using AI engineering tools such as Devin, Claude, or similar systems to produce production-ready code, tests, documentation, and operational improvements.
  • Ability to independently diagnose complex performance and reliability problems and clearly communicate architecture, implementation decisions, and technical trade-offs.
  • Preferred qualifications include batch and streaming pipeline experience, Spark or Databricks optimization, Databricks SQL and SDKs, Delta operations, schema migrations, Azure Blob Storage, Azure Identity, Azure Key Vault, reporting or analytics systems, Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, service-level indicators and objectives, error budgets, data governance, encryption, auditability, tenant isolation, and incremental modernization experience.

  • Annual base pay range is $139,725—$209,588 USD for candidates in specified jurisdictions; discretionary bonuses, equity, commissions, and benefits may also apply.
