Staff Software Engineer | Developer Experience in UK

Responsibilities

  • Own technical direction for a significant part of the Developer Experience mandate and drive initiatives through adoption.
  • Improve developer productivity across multiple engineering teams by enhancing processes, tooling, and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Design and build workflows and tooling spanning local development, code review, CI/CD, and release.
  • Lead evaluation, implementation, and governance of AI-assisted developer tooling across the software lifecycle.
  • Treat internal engineers as customers by using surveys, delivery metrics, and support data to guide platform improvements.
  • Define cross-track standards, provide practical migration paths, and drive adoption across engineering teams.
  • Mentor engineers and raise technical standards through design reviews, architecture decisions, and maintainable engineering practices.
  • Participate in sustainable on-call operations for Developer Experience services and tooling.

Requirements

  • Software engineering background with deep expertise in at least one programming language and the ability to work in unfamiliar codebases.
  • Experience working on a product team and shipping software to external customers.
  • Strong interest and experience in developer experience, build systems, CI/CD, internal platforms, release engineering, or developer tooling.
  • Experience identifying and delivering improvements across multiple teams with technical ownership and influence without authority.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-assisted development capabilities pragmatically, run experiments, and establish safe guardrails.
  • Sound judgment, persistence, and an ability to balance ideal solutions with shippable, iterative improvements.
  • Preferred experience measuring developer productivity using DORA, developer surveys, or another defensible approach.
  • Preferred experience building or operating AI-assisted developer tooling, including code review tools, agents, MCP servers, or evaluations.
  • Preferred experience with internal developer platforms or portals, especially Backstage.
  • Preferred community-building experience through open source, guilds, communities of practice, developer advocacy, or adoption programs.
  • Preferred experience with GitLab or comparable CI/CD at scale and build systems for large polyglot codebases, including runner fleets, caching, artifacts, and compile or test-time optimization.
