Staff Software Engineer, Foundations - CAN in Canada

Responsibilities

  • Lead the migration of the resource data model from MongoDB to a schema-aware PostgreSQL platform while maintaining backward compatibility and customer integrations.
  • Design and evolve high-throughput ingestion and processing pipelines for terabyte-scale distributed data streams.
  • Build correctness-focused systems using idempotency, conditional writes, reconciliation, backpressure, and eventual-consistency patterns.
  • Productionize the Query API with schema versioning, joins, exports, per-tenant isolation, and predictable latency.
  • Set architectural direction for Kafka, event queuing, Redis caching, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB storage across the Foundations platform.
  • Diagnose production failures involving hot partitions, unbounded fan-out, and online rewrites of continuously written tables.
  • Drive cross-team technical initiatives and multi-quarter roadmaps while mentoring senior engineers through design reviews and hands-on contributions.
  • Champion reliability, observability, operational hygiene, and responsible use of AI tools.

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading platform migrations between major architecture versions while maintaining backward compatibility and availability.
  • Deep experience with distributed systems, streaming, queuing infrastructure, and enterprise-scale data pipeline engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of Kafka concepts including partitioning, consumer groups, redelivery, and idempotency, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience modeling and operating relational and document databases at scale, including PostgreSQL and MongoDB query planning, connection pooling, and online schema changes.
  • Experience collaborating with engineering leadership to define and deliver multi-quarter technical roadmaps.
  • Solid AWS fundamentals and professional experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Ability to communicate complex systems tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders and influence cross-functional partners.
  • Curiosity and sound judgment in applying AI to improve engineering efficiency and impact.
