Responsibilities

  • Own the mobile app architecture, feature architecture, device experiences, pairing and provisioning flows, and consumer-facing behavior.
  • Make mobile technology decisions and build hands-on in React Native, Expo, and TypeScript for iOS and Android.
  • Define capability-based device definitions and onboard new products in partnership with embedded, cloud, hardware, and product teams.
  • Develop reusable components, patterns, libraries, layered UI components, and semantic theming systems.
  • Establish and document mobile engineering patterns and best practices and drive adoption across teams.
  • Own testing and automation strategy, crash and performance targets, staged rollout, and field issues from real homes.
  • Solve complex BLE, WiFi, device protocol, WebSocket, and real-hardware reliability problems.
  • Lead technical research, proof-of-concept validation, and architectural decision-making.
  • Mentor mid-level and senior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing.
  • Coordinate technical roadmaps and delivery with distributed teams in the UK, China, and other regions.
  • Champion AI-assisted development workflows and shared engineering practices.
  • Write design documents, drive technical decisions to closure, and remain accountable for production outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience with deep React Native and TypeScript expertise at consumer scale.
  • Experience owning the architecture of a large-scale consumer mobile app from design through launch and long-term support.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including setting direction and influencing engineers through design and code review.
  • Strong knowledge of full-stack architecture, mobile-to-cloud integration, API contracts, caching, real-time synchronization, and failure and retry behavior.
  • Fluency with Xcode, Android Studio, Git, Gradle, CocoaPods, Swift Package Manager, CI/CD, staged rollout, and production diagnostics.
  • Native Swift and/or Kotlin expertise sufficient to debug across the bridge and implement platform-specific behavior.
  • Experience with Expo Router, typed routes, config plugins, custom native modules, TanStack Query, Reanimated, and mobile build systems is preferred.
  • Experience with binary device protocols, connected devices, IoT ecosystems, BLE, WiFi provisioning, or hardware product launches is preferred.
  • Experience with Rust, C, C++, robotics, consumer electronics, smart home products, or firmware collaboration is preferred.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools is preferred.

Salary: $190k - $210k/yr
