Responsibilities

Own and evolve Pelago’s event-driven data platform and production data pipelines.
Manage Infrastructure as Code and deployment systems to make environments reproducible and releases safe.
Build consistent patterns for integrating data sources and services.
Deliver platform and data capabilities for analytics, reporting, and member-facing product features.
Own observability, alerting, on-call operations, and incident response for services and data systems.
Optimize AWS hosting and data costs while maintaining reliability.
Build platform capabilities supporting agentic workflows.
Partner with analytics, product, clinical, and commercial teams to define platform ownership and downstream use.
Improve AI-assisted engineering practices, testing, documentation, knowledge sharing, and review quality.

Requirements

Strong production experience as a backend, platform, or systems engineer in a startup or scale-up environment.
Hands-on experience with Terraform, Infrastructure as Code, and building and maintaining deployment pipelines.
Strong experience designing, securing, and operating AWS cloud-native services.
Proficiency in Python and TypeScript with Node across backend services, data pipelines, and tooling.
Deep experience with event-driven architectures and data platforms, including Kafka or AWS-native streaming and messaging and production third-party data integrations.
Strong observability and reliability skills, including monitoring, alerting, and runbooks for incorrect, late, or incomplete systems and data.
Experience optimizing hosting costs and making cost-aware architecture decisions.
Familiarity with agentic workflows and systems that support them.
Strong relational database design and SQL skills.
Strong product sense and ability to understand downstream platform use.
Ability to operate autonomously in ambiguous environments and make sound trade-offs.
Fluency with AI-augmented engineering workflows while maintaining human judgment and QA discipline.
Preferred: experience with dbt and data modeling, healthcare or regulated software, healthcare data integrations, marketing or engagement platforms, or building foundational systems from 0 to 1.

Benefits

Hybrid full-time role requiring three days per week in the NYC office.
Total compensation includes an incentive bonus program, stock options, comprehensive benefits, and applicable incentive pay.
