Software Engineer, Memory & Search in USA

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship memory and search experiences across Claude.ai, Cowork, and Claude Code from backend services through model tools and user interfaces.
  • Run product experiments, test hypotheses with real users, measure results, and make persevere-or-pivot decisions.
  • Shape Claude’s use of memory and retrieval, including storage, search timing, ranking, presentation, and user control.
  • Define product metrics and build evaluations to measure and maintain system quality.
  • Improve search relevance and recall using embeddings, hybrid retrieval, ranking, and user-facing result interfaces.
  • Partner with product, design, privacy, legal, and safeguards teams to address consent and enterprise requirements.
  • Raise standards for latency, polish, reliability, design reviews, and code reviews, while sharing on-call responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating user-facing products used by large numbers of people, including backend services.
  • Experience building agentic systems or LLM-powered products involving tool use, retrieval, and prompt or context design.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and TypeScript across backend services and web front ends.
  • Track record of taking products or features from idea through launch and iterating based on usage data and user feedback.
  • Experience defining product metrics and running experiments.
  • Strong product judgment and written and verbal communication skills, including collaboration with product managers, designers, and non-engineering partners.
  • Interest in AI safety and Anthropic’s mission.
  • Preferred qualifications include founder or early-stage engineering experience, zero-to-one product development, search or retrieval systems, LLM or ML evaluations, personalization, consumer products, sensitive-data or enterprise requirements, performance-critical work, and mentoring or technical direction.

  • Staff are currently expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time, with some roles requiring more office time.

  • Anthropic sponsors visas and will make every reasonable effort to obtain a visa if it makes an offer, though sponsorship is not successful for every role and candidate.

Salary: $320k - $485k/yr
