Responsibilities

  • Own the shared platform layer supporting the Patient Care Application, AWS, vendor integrations, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, GitHub, deployments, and other critical systems.
  • Establish reusable infrastructure patterns, conventions, abstractions, and architectural standards for engineering teams.
  • Design, improve, and operate scalable, reliable, secure cloud infrastructure and platform services.
  • Build foundational Ruby on Rails services for authorization/RBAC, jobs and queues, deployments, integrations, and other shared capabilities.
  • Improve developer experience by turning infrastructure bottlenecks and manual processes into reliable self-service workflows.
  • Support platform, IAM, HIE, EMR, and integration layers beneath product teams.
  • Troubleshoot production systems and improve the reliability and resilience of critical infrastructure.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to understand needs and deliver platform capabilities.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience as an individual contributor building and operating production backend systems.
  • Deep Ruby on Rails expertise, including hands-on experience with application and data layers and core backend services.
  • Strong relational database skills in data modeling, query optimization, query plans, slow-query resolution, N+1 remediation, and indexing.
  • Experience building and operating platform capabilities such as authentication/RBAC, jobs and queues, CI/CD, deployments, integrations, and shared services.
  • Ability to work across application and infrastructure layers, including willingness for application engineers to work in infrastructure or cloud/platform engineers to work deeply in Rails.
  • Experience handling major Rails upgrades, database migrations, zero-downtime schema changes, large-scale data backfills, dependency upgrades, and security remediation.
  • Track record of keeping production codebases current through ongoing dependency and package upgrades.
  • Strong systems thinking, technical judgment, ownership, execution, pragmatic problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • AWS and Terraform experience are a plus but are not required.
