Staff Backend Engineer, Passwordless in Canada

Responsibilities

  • Partner with product, design, and cross-functional stakeholders to own problem spaces and deliver effective customer solutions.
  • Independently design, build, deploy, monitor, and operate major features for passwordless authentication systems.
  • Lead technical design discussions, influence the roadmap, and make strategic decisions that improve product health and team velocity.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and strong engineering practices.
  • Use telemetry and observability tools to troubleshoot production incidents and guide technical decisions.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of professional software development experience with demonstrated technical leadership and mentorship.
  • Deep expertise in Java, object-oriented design, multithreading, and high-performance services.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating complex large-scale distributed systems in a cloud environment such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Strong knowledge of scalable, reliable, and secure architecture and the ability to lead technical design discussions.
  • Ability to debug and remediate issues independently in complex and unfamiliar codebases and systems.
  • Strong knowledge of phishing-resistant authentication methods, including Passkeys, FIDO2, or WebAuthn.
  • Experience with identity and access management and protocols such as OAuth, OIDC, and SAML.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, ownership, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js is preferred.

  • Annual base salary range of $160,000—$220,000 CAD for candidates located in Canada.
