Staff Engineer - Payments in USA

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive long-term technical strategy for payment experiences across mobile apps, SDKs, payment terminals, and distributed backend systems.
  • Architect unified shopper and merchant journeys across devices, applications, and payment surfaces.
  • Lead resolution of complex reliability, performance, security, payment-flow, and device-compatibility challenges at global scale.
  • Establish architectural boundaries, APIs, and integration patterns that enable cross-functional teams to work independently.
  • Translate ambiguous business goals into executable technical plans and drive alignment with Product, Design, Legal, and other stakeholders.
  • Mentor engineers across levels and develop their ability to solve complex technical problems independently.
  • Improve observability, testing, and operational excellence while ensuring robust and secure integrations with external technology partners.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience in modern production environments with Staff-level scope.
  • 5+ years of direct, hands-on mobile development experience with production expertise in either Android and Kotlin or iOS and Swift.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to cross-train across mobile platforms.
  • Deep understanding of mobile architecture, SDK design, concurrency, performance, and large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience building and maintaining merchant- or consumer-facing SDKs.
  • Ability to set technical direction, influence without formal authority, manage stakeholders across time zones, and build alignment on difficult decisions.
  • Strong ownership and ability to identify critical problems, determine needed changes, and drive solutions to completion.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring new visa sponsorship; visa transfers may be supported, but H-1B CAP sponsorship is not available.
