Software Engineer, Safety Engineering in USA

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end development of internal tools that improve the safety of OpenAI’s models, including protections for vulnerable users.
  • Partner with Safety Systems researchers, engineers, and model policy creators to translate workflows and requirements into durable product solutions.
  • Build full-stack experiences for labeling and inspecting data, analyzing and reviewing failure cases, and surfacing insights for iteration.
  • Optimize internal applications for usability, speed, and scale to increase team velocity and reduce time to fix safety issues.
  • Transform successful AI-assisted safety workflows into external-facing safety products for developers.

Requirements

  • Have 5+ years of relevant engineering experience at technology and product-driven companies.
  • Be proficient with JavaScript, React, and other web technologies.
  • Be proficient with at least one backend language; the team uses Python.
  • Have experience with relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL.
  • Have an interest in AI/ML; direct experience is not required.
  • Be comfortable partnering closely with researchers and policy writers to ship tools that improve model safety.

Salary: $185k - $385k/yr
